Market Day Buzzwords!
Friends, a new year is upon us, and it’s going to be FAB! We are gearing up for the 2018 Rebel Junk Vintage Market tour, and guys, we’ve got some serious design fever. There are so many amazing projects to do, and so much opportunity to find beautiful items to use in our homes! Our ridiculously awesome vendors specialize in all things Vintage, Antique, Rustic, Retro, Industrial, Farmhouse, Shabby, Chippy... wait… what ARE all those things??
In the junkin’ world, so many buzzwords are tossed around to describe what we do, but if you’re not in the lingo-loop, it’s easy to get lost! Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the terms you may hear when we see you at the next show!
VINTAGE! This is honestly one of the most common terms you’ll hear. I mean, it’s in our NAME after all! So what is “vintage” really? It’s pretty simple. Anything you find that’s 20 or more years old can be considered a vintage item. Yup… that’s most of us. Also, many furniture and décor items you’ll find in our vendors’ booths!
ANTIQUE! This one gets thrown out there often, but is harder to actually find than a vintage item. A true antique should be 100 or more years old. Anything produced in 1918 or earlier falls into this category! To put this in perspective, that’s the same year Prohibition was first ratified (by Mississippi, if you were wondering). The Boston Red Sox defeated the Chicago Cubs in the 15th World Series. World War I came to an end. It was a big year, and now officially defines antiques!
RETRO! Ok, so “retro” is a little more loosely defined. Really, it just means that an item’s design is inspired by an earlier time period. Usually, it will be a relatively recent time period… the Paleolithic period, not exactly retro. A 50s-style diner with a working jukebox and a legit milkshake menu? SO retro!
INDUSTRIAL! One of THE hottest trends right now, “industrial” style draws inspiration from factories, and other older buildings by utilizing materials common to such architecture. You might see light fixtures or shelving designed using metal piping, or brickwork utilized in an unexpected space. A common theme in industrial is the use of Edison style lightbulbs, and I’m not sad about it. They are SO. DANG. COOL!
SHABBY/CHIPPY! One of the absolute CUTEST styles out there, this one is often referred to as “shabby chic” because of its natural ability to evoke femininity and daintiness. Designers choose pieces for their worn or well-loved appearance, and many will distress a piece of furniture or décor to achieve the desired look. Whether the overall look is meant to be shabby/chippy or select items are used to achieve intentional contrast, this style is adorable! It makes a place feel lived-in and homey, and has the added benefit of longevity. You just can’t go wrong when dings and dents actually ADD to the aesthetic!
RUSTIC! Now, I’m mostly outdoorsy in the sense that I like to eat my meals on the deck every now and then, but there’s some serious charm associated with the rustic style. This design style emphasizes natural beauty and rugged, earthy elements. Natural wood and stonework, simple, neutral color palettes, and welcoming warmth are all hallmarks of the rustic style. What could be wrong with that?! Nothing, guys. The answer is nothing.
FARMHOUSE! Last but not least, farmhouse is more of a “feel” than anything. Drawing inspiration from rural homesteads and simplistic living, the farmhouse effect is meant to be open, welcoming, simple, and cozy. Basically, everything wonderful. Soft textures, neutral color palettes, and a heart for entertaining friends and family all have a home in the modern farmhouse. Here is where you’ll find things like barnwood accent walls, sliding barn doors, maybe some grain scoop wall sconces… the options are varied and endless! With solid momentum built up over the last couple years, this style is here to stay, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier about it!
Did I miss any style buzzwords you’ve heard at a Rebel Junk Vintage Market?! Any you’d like to add to the list? The 2018 tour kicks off in February just outside Portland, OR, and each of these styles will be represented. Which will you be hunting for?!
